FAQs

What is somatic-based psychedelic therapy and how does it differ from traditional talk therapy?

Somatic-based psychedelic therapy involves the use of psychedelics (such as ketamine or cannabis) to help access the body and process stored tension and trauma. This process is different than traditional talk therapy because processing is done through feeling sensations, emotions, and impulses, whereas talk therapy focuses on thoughts, narratives and cognitive solutions.

Who is a good candidate for this type of therapy and what issues can it help with?

Anyone struggling with chronic stress, traumatic experiences, anxiety, depression, PTSD, numbness, dissociation, and those who have not had success in traditional talk therapy

How do somatic and psychedelic elements work together in a session?

Psychedelics help to lower psychological defenses and allow greater access to the stored tension in the body. Specifically, psychedelics help to quiet the Default Mode Network in the brain, which can inhibit trauma from being processed.

What should I expect during my first session and how should I prepare?

During your first session we will begin to build a relationship, discussing your background, goals, and challenges. Do not expect to use psychedelics when you first arrive.

Do you offer medical psychedelics like ketamine or do I need a referral?

No, I will refer you to a prescriber

Are sessions confidential and what is the typical duration and frequency?

Yes, sessions are confidential and my typical session length is 1 hour, and 2 hours for medicine sessions.

Do you accept insurance for somatic or psychedelic therapy services?

I do not accept insurance, and my rate is $150 per hour

What are the safety protocols and how are challenging emotional experiences handled?

You are not allowed to drive home after a psychedelic session, for your own safety. If using ketamine, a prescriber will do a medical screening. During sessions challenging emotional experiences are expected to arise. If an emotional experience becomes too big, I can help you refocus attention to a neutral sensation or feeling, this will help to keep you within your window of tolerance.

How soon might I see results from this type of therapy?

Results can be soon as one or two sessions, although there is no guarantee. After a somatic release, a person may experience reduced muscle tension, a feeling of lightness and improved sleep.
